Sideways

Ahu and I caught this last weekend. Heard it was one of the year's best, and the wine angle was an instant draw for me. Saw it at the Marcus Cinema in Elgin.

One of the best movies I've seen in ages. Seriously. Two or three of the funniest scenes ever put on film. One scene involves a merlot discussion. Another: one of the characters shows up at a motel door. Completely naked. Third one involves recovering someone's "lost" wallet. I was crying. Couldn't breathe.

Black comedy with some solid drama moments mixed in. There's this great scene where Miles and Maya sit on the patio talking about wine, and Miles launches into this thing about his passion for pinot noir grapes. Paul Giamatti (as Miles) totally nails it. You realize he's not really talking about wine at all. It's a metaphor for his own life. Thomas Haden Church (from Ned & Stacy) as Jack is also fantastic.

Was still cracking up about those scenes days later. That's actually a pretty good test for whether a movie's any good, right? Still laughing days after? Yeah. Go see it.
