On Calling in Sick

Productivity

Got an issue with how people think about calling in sick. So many Americans have this attitude that you shouldn't call in unless you're basically barfing up a lung. "Tough it out." Get into work. Support the team.

This causes way more harm than good.

Flip it around for a second. Say you've got a kid in daycare, 18 months old. One of the daycare workers catches the flu over the weekend. She's sick but not SO sick she can't "tough it out" and come in Monday.

Would you want her showing up to work around your kid? Doubt it. You'd be furious she brought her germs anywhere near your baby.

So why do we think differently about the office?

You get sick over the weekend. You really think your coworkers WANT you dragging yourself in on Monday? Think they consider you so critical to the team that they'd rather catch your flu than have you miss a day or two? Not a chance. Personally? I'd much rather you stay far, far away from me until you're over it. Don't even want you breathing the same air.

So drop the tough, macho, "gotta get in, people need me" act. Stay home. Get better. We do need you. Just not badly enough to get sick too.
