Ah, the home of Dom Perignon! Epernay is in the middle of the Champagne region of France, where all true champagnes are made. We visited Moet & Chandon and a couple of other champagne houses. This town is about one hour east of Paris.
We went to Bodrum and stayed at Ahu's dad's summer house. Bodrum is a small city on the sea. It is quite beautiful and a relaxing visit. We had the opportunity to go sailing and visit an old fortress.
We stopped at Ephesus on the way to Bodrum. It was really the first time in my life that I saw ancient ruins of any kind. It was very interesting to see structures that were built many hundreds of years before.
Istanbul was our first stop on our honeymoon. At this point, it was still sort of extended wedding time, though. Ahu's friend Julie accompanied us and we had a second wedding reception there.
We went to Locarno after Stresa. Locarno is actually in Switzerland but is close to the border of Italy and they speak Italian there. We did a lot of hiking, including one trip to the top of a short mountain.
Milan was only a short stay for us on a late afternoon between trains but it was a beautiful city. The church, in particular, the Duomo, I believe, was stunning.
Stresa is in northern Italy, close to the border of Switzerland. This area is where Hemingway stayed when he was writing "A Farewell to Arms." We did a little sightseeing and then moved on to Locarno.
At the end of our honeymoon, Ahu and I spent two weeks in Hawaii. One week on Maui and a week on Kauai. After all the walking, hiking, and sightseeing in Europe, Ahu and I just laid by the pool every single day in Hawaii. We took a little time to do short sightseeing trips but we were still by the pool every day. I have great memories of just sitting and reading, getting cooled off in the pool, and then sitting and reading. I have a number of water damaged paperbacks from that part of our trip. Every time I see them I am reminded of this relaxing time.
After Turkey and the "Greece Incident" we flew to Rome. Rome was the first part of our honeymoon where Ahu and I were actually on our own. So we greatly enjoyed winding down from the wedding and receptions eating pizzas margherita and wine with every meal. We particularly enjoyed the ruins and Rome in the evenings. Like other parts of the world outside of the United States, people in Rome eat late, usually 8 or 9 PM or later. So many of the restaurants are open late and you can dine under the city lights or by candlelight in a sidewalk cafe.
